MARY SCHAIRER I do not know why I do what I do. Years ago, in a drawing class my teacher, Martin Lubner, looked at my nice, careful, boring drawing. After a moment he picked up a scrap of paper from the floor and dropped it on the drawing. The drawing came to life. At that magical moment my interest in collage was born. My subject matter is unforeseen. Wonderful ideas usually come to naught. Only when I give up a certain sense of predetermined result and let the work itself tell me where to go, does it come to life. I hope then that it may suggest a small aspect of our crazy, disconnected, sometimes funny but scary world. Grappling with the problems of any piece of art is endlessly interesting, absorbing, frustrating, challenging, and with a little luck, sometimes rewarding. That is why I do what I do. |
